CHUCK HAGEL PICK IS PURE 'TOKENISM'
Obama will nominate Chuck Hagel, former United States Senator from Nebraska, to replace Leon Panetta as Secretary of Defense.
The main job of the U.S. secretary of Defense is to plan, develop and execute policies that concern the military affairs and national security of the country. Also, such an official is responsible for the department's resource management and fiscal and program evaluation. The secretary of Defense runs the entire department from the Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD), which comprises the official's entire staff. The secretary's staff assists in carrying out assigned tasks in accordance with their job titles. Members of the OSD include the deputy secretary of Defense, director of Defense research and engineering, director of operational test and evaluation and director of administration and management.
At the Defense Department it is of vital interest that the office is adaptable. The threat of Islamic extremism, the Arab Spring and more importantly Iran - indicates that necessity of having a bold thinker at the helm. Chuck Hagel is NOT that person and here is why:
In recent times, the war on terror and tackling the threat posed from Islamic extremism has defined the beginning of the new millennium More precisely the war in Iraq.
Like most, Hagel supported the intervention, but when the going got tough, he wilted away. The death toll was rising and sectarian violence was tearing the country apart. In January 2007, Hagel openly criticized President Bush's surge of troops to Iraq. Bush offered a bold solution for victory, Hagel wanted to ‘cut and run'. He called the surge "the most dangerous foreign policy blunder in this country since Vietnam, if it's carried out”. He also compared Iraq to Vietnam.
I am not sure he has ever admitted to his error in judgement on that.
Contrary to what Obama and Clinton want you to believe, the threat of Islamic extremism is alive and well (unfortunately) in the world, especially Benghazi. America needs a Defense Department that knows that it cannot 'cut and run' when it gets difficult. It is of vital national security interest that a proven military man is at the helm at the Pentagon. With sequestration and the continual threats to diminish our military, it is essential that Obama nominate a bold thinker, not just a body to suit whatever political agenda he may have.
I know that there is going to be bipartisan issues against his nomination. The gay rights groups don’t want him for calling President Bill Clinton's nominee for ambassador to Luxembourg, James Hormel, as "openly, aggressively gay". Supporters of Israel don’t like him either following his assertion that the Israel Lobby in Congress was intimidating. He also had issues with the 2006 Israel-Lebanon conflict.
The Israel issue is more important due to the strategic nature of the country and its status as the only ally in the region.
Chuck Hagel is a Republican in Name Only (RINO)! That is why Obama is going to nominate him. He has endorsed liberals over conservatives at most junctures since the ‘age of Obama’ and was even a tip to be his VP pick. More importantly it comes down to whether he can get the job done and I am absolutely convinced that he would be a disaster. His views on Iraq should have disqualified him immediately from the process.
The fact that Obama is going all the way in this nomination is pure ‘tokenism’ and I am sick and tired of it.
Perhaps Obama should have nominated John McCain for the post. But by nominating Hagel, the President is playing politics with our military and that is reckless!
